The mission of the National Society of Pershing Rifles is: "To aid in the development of successful officers in the Army, Navy, and Air Force, to foster camaraderie and esprit de corps among all three Reserve Officers Training Corps programs, to further the purpose, traditions, and concepts of the United States Army, Navy, and Air Force, to give civilians an opportunity to be part of a military organization without a formal commitment to the military." Ever since the creation of the Society in 1891 by our founder, General of the Armies John J. Pershing, we have prided ourselves on our long history and tradition to include members such as: Secretary of State Colin Powell, General Larry Ellis, James Earl Jones, General Jack Keane, General Curtis LeMay, and others.

Company M-4 has, and still is, leading the way. Every year, a National Competition (NATCON) is held where companies from around the country compete for trophies. Currently, Appalachian State University has the highest overall NATCON wins with 13 national titles. Practices include elements such as drill and ceremony, exhibition drill, color guard, and assembly/dissasembly of the M1903 Springfield. Appalachian State University always stands apart from the rest with our 'dress black' uniform while competing.

Perhaps our most important feature as an organization is our brotherhood. We are considered an honorary fraternity with friendships that will last a lifetime. If you are interested in becoming a part of our long and proud history, our meetings take place every Wednesday at 1700 (5:00pm) at the upper-level of the Varsity Gymnasium on campus. You do not have to be a member of ROTC or of the military in order to join.

“The purpose of the National Society of Pershing Rifles is to develop, to the highest degree possible, outstanding traits of leadership, military science, military bearing, and discipline within the framework of a military oriented, honorary fraternity.”

- General of the Armies of the United States, John J. Pershing -
